Naproxen is an effective anti-inflammatory agent and fever-reducer, effective in a range of conditions involving pain and inflammation. Patients most often buy Naproxen to treat:

• Take 500 mg for the first dose.
• Take 250 mg three or four times per day as needed.

For gout:

• Take 750 mg for the first dose.
• Take 250 mg every eight hours until the attack has passed.

As with most pain medications, Naproxen works best if taken at the earliest symptoms of pain. While it will still provide benefit if taken at later stages, effects may not be as great and it can take up to two weeks for maximum benefit to be felt.

Treatment is typically as-needed for injury or for attacks or flare-ups of gout or arthritis. Once the pain and inflammation is gone treatment should end, to be repeated at the next flare-up.
